I didn't post to /r/civ in a long time to be fair, but I'm back with some awesome pictures. I've got this great idea wanted to try for a long time, based on some real life historical events, and it seems like a great time to finally do it.
The map is based off this one, and it's a nice little thing, but the idea is to use them as templates for cities instead of places. This really comes to fruition as soon you start to play with them. There are 4 types of borders that define a city: mountains, rivers, beaches and lakes, but you don't define them by any particular location, you just need one. What I'm going to do is pick a random city in the world to base off of, and then start from there. I'll pick a random location on map and then see what city it is based off of. If something in the city and some of this land is in another city, then the distance between those two cities should be less. If it is the same distance, then city isn't "inside" the other city.
Let's talk about mountains. Mountain ranges are often quite long distances from one another. In fact, the whole idea of borders here is around the whole idea that cities are only so large. the first step is figuring out what size city each place is called after. I did all this information for each city in the game, so now I have this list of the different names for each city city:
Here, I've decided to make cities the same size as a mountain range (I'm in the Pacific North-West region):
If our first city is too small, then we can just pick another random place on the map to base off of, then we can just use that to measure distance the city at hand. If, on the other hand, our first city isn't too big as it is, then we need to make it the same size as a mountain range. To do that, just pick a random location on the map and see what size city it is based off of:
This means we don't ever have to actually go a mountain range in order to make a city smaller, we can just go somewhere else on the map and start game right there. So what happens if we just start making very small cities on one side of a mountain range, and then move a bit to the other side for a city? Then we see that it really doesn't make sense for the game to think that we can just travel through a mountain range.
